is it dangerous to have a protection trained dog with kids at home?
You have some really good answers here. If you have a properly bred, correctly brought up dog that has has the right training by someone who knows what they are doing, you will have no issues.
As far as the kid situation, you did not mention ages and such, but, as a rule, NEVER leave a child with a dog alone, ever!!!
A trained protection dog will afford you more realistic protection and better reaction time should the situation warrant it and I would trust a dog that has been trained and is genetically sound much more then one that is not!
Hope I helped!

How old are the kids?? Who is it protecting?? Do you know the specific commands that the dog relates to when protecting?? How old is the dog?? Where did it live, in or out? Has it ever been domesticated before? Lots of questions before this can be answered honestly

If you ask the insurance companies, it is dangerous to have a protection trained dog period. Personally, if the dog is mentally sound and stable and PROPERLY trained I think a trained dog is less likely to bite than one who isn’t because they have been taught under what circumstances it is appropriate to bite. However, if you are at all concerned about your kids (or don’t have a lot of money to spend on insurance…because most insurance companies won’t insure you or will charge through the nose with a dog trained to bitework) then don’t get one. Few people actually *need* a protection trained dog and most dogs are naturally protective of their pack and territory.

I agree with Miff’s answer.
If the dog is trained professionally he will protect the whole family and be great with the kids.

It depends. Is this, for example, a police/army trained dog living with the family? If so, then there should be no problem. Police dog handlers have their dogs with them 24 hours a day, with, and without, the family.
If this is an amateur trained dog, trained to enhance aggressive tendencies rather than a well rounded obedient dog that just happens to have been trained to guard as well, then, No, definitely not.

Depends on who trained it and what it thinks it’s protecting.
If it’s a pro trained dog and it thinks the kids are the clients they will be safer than they would be if left with their parents

I agree - the only dangerous protection dogs are the ones home trained by people who want a guard dog but don’t want to spend the money on professional training.
A protection dog with professional training behind it will be perfectly fine in a family environment - much like the police K9s who are brought home at the end of a shift.

A professionaly trained protection will be fine as long as it has been socalized around children. Dogs properly trained in bitework are actually less likely to bite (inappropriatly) than the average household pet.
Trying to train your own dog with out knowing what you are doing or using a less than reputable trained is another story and a dog trained imporperly could be a danger not only to children but to everyone.

The person above me is correct, a dog that is CORRECTLY and RESPONSIBLY trained in protection is less likely to have an accidental bite happen. This doesn't mean that this dog can be left alone with young children ( no dog should be)… any dog should be accompanied by an adult when there are young children in the room, accidents can happen at any time. If the dog is correctly trained and has the nerves that it takes to actually get titled in a protection sport he/she should be fine around children… provided the dog has been socialized around children. You know who could answer this question to a T…. Greek Man…. ashame he's no longer with us isn't it.

no will be the answer in general. Please do your research about the trainer. Normally they can do the work perfect. What breed and bloodline, is also important but i assume genetic transfer is only 35% so the rest is always depends on training.
Hope this will not destroy the your love to the dog.
